Botox Aftercare: What to Do (and Avoid) in the First 24 Hours

You have just had Botox, and now the questions start. Can you go to the gym tonight. Is it fine to lie down and take a nap. Should you skip the glass of wine at dinner. The treatment itself took about ten minutes, but the rest of the day is where most people feel unsure about what they are actually allowed to do.

Aftercare matters, though not as much as the internet makes it sound. A few simple habits in the first 24 hours help the product settle where we placed it and lower the small chance of bruising. The short list of what not to do after Botox is easy to remember. Here is what we tell our patients in Pickering, and the reasoning behind each step.

What should you do in the first few hours?

The first four hours do most of the work. Stay upright during that window, so no lying flat and no face-down naps. This gives the product time to settle into the muscles we treated.

Keep your hands off the treated area for the rest of the day. No rubbing, no massaging, no pressing. Skip facials, face-down massages, and anything that puts firm pressure on the skin. Normal facial expressions are completely fine. Talking, eating, and smiling do not move the product around.

How long after Botox can you lie down?

Stay upright for about four hours. After that, you can lie down, nap, or go to bed as usual.

The upright rule is a sensible precaution rather than a strict medical order. Keeping your head up for the first few hours helps the product stay exactly where your injector placed it. Once those hours pass, your normal routine is fine.

Can you exercise or work out after Botox?

Skip strenuous exercise for about 24 hours. That includes the gym, running, heavy lifting, and hot yoga.

Hard workouts raise your heart rate and blood flow, which can increase the odds of bruising and swelling at the injection points. Sweating and a flushed face right after treatment are also worth avoiding. A gentle walk is fine. By the next day, you can return to your full routine.

Can you shower after Botox?

Yes, you can shower the same day. Keep the water warm rather than very hot, and wash your face gently.

What we do ask you to avoid for about 24 hours is deliberate heat. That means saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and hot yoga. Heat widens your blood vessels, which can add to redness and bruising while the area is still settling.

Can you drink alcohol after Botox?

It is best to skip alcohol on the day of your treatment. Wine, beer, and spirits all thin the blood slightly and widen blood vessels, which raises the chance of a bruise.

This one is short-lived. By the following day, a drink is no concern. Delaying it for the evening of your appointment is a simple way to protect the result.

Can you wear makeup or touch the treated area?

Leave the area alone for the rest of the day, which means no rubbing or massaging. Makeup is usually fine to apply gently after a few hours.

When you do put makeup back on, use clean hands or a clean brush and a light touch. Press, do not drag. Save facials, microdermabrasion, and any hands-on skin treatment for another day, since firm pressure on the area is the thing we want to avoid early on.

Does Botox hurt?

Most people feel a quick pinch at each injection point, and little else. We use a very fine needle, so numbing cream is rarely needed for standard Botox and Nuceiva treatments.

Mild redness and small raised bumps at the injection sites are normal right after. They usually settle within an hour or so. A little tenderness that evening is also common and fades quickly.

How do you avoid bruising, and how long do bruises last?

Occasional bruising is normal, even with careful placement. Some areas of the face bruise more easily than others, and some people simply bruise more than others.

A few things lower the odds. Avoid alcohol on the day of treatment, skip strenuous exercise for 24 hours, and stay off the treated area. If your provider approves, pausing blood-thinning supplements like fish oil and high-dose vitamin E for a few days beforehand can help too. If a bruise does appear, it usually fades within a few days to about a week, and makeup covers it easily in the meantime.

When can you sleep on your face?

Try not to sleep directly on the treated area on the first night. Sleeping on your back is the safest choice while the product settles.

After that first night, you can sleep however you like. There is no need to change your sleep position for days on end. One night of care is enough.

What is normal, and when should you call us?

Mild redness, small bumps, slight tenderness, and the occasional bruise are all expected and short-lived. None of these mean anything went wrong.

Give the result time before you judge it. Botox and Nuceiva build gradually, with full effect at about 10 to 14 days, so early softening is only part of the picture. You can read more about how long Botox takes to work if you are watching the mirror day by day. If you ever notice anything unusual or concerning, such as spreading weakness, a drooping lid, or signs of infection, contact the clinic and we will look after you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon can I go back to work?+

Right away. Botox has no real downtime, so desk work and errands the same day are completely fine. Just skip the gym and keep your hands off your face.

Can I fly after Botox?+

Yes. Flying does not affect how Botox settles or how well it works, so a flight the same day or the next is no problem.

Will good aftercare make my Botox last longer?+

Aftercare protects the settling process and lowers bruising, but it does not add weeks to your result. How long Botox lasts depends more on your dose, your muscle strength, and your metabolism than on whether you skipped one workout.

I noticed a small bump right after my appointment. Is that normal?+

Yes. Small bumps at the injection points are just the product under the skin, and they usually flatten within an hour. They are a normal part of the process and settle on their own.

When will I actually see results?+

Most people notice softening around three to four days in, with the full effect at about 10 to 14 days. For fine lines and wrinkles, the ten day mark is the fairest time to assess how the treatment landed. Botox aftercare is simple, and we walk you through every step of it before you leave the room. If you are booking your first Botox visit in Pickering, our team will assess your muscles, explain what to expect, and send you home knowing exactly what to do. Book a Botox consultation →
